On the evening of July 24, a crowd formed in the plaza near Starbucks on the 600 block of Santa Cruz Avenue and did something downtown Menlo Park hadn't seen on a random Friday in years: it stayed. People danced while a cover band called The Members played, then stuck around for The Wanderers. A few doors down, Bistro Vida and Bar Loretta filled up. At Gallery House, more than 30 people wandered in during the first hour of live music, a number the gallery's own organizers said it might normally see across an entire day.
None of this happened by accident, and none of it was really about the music. It was the first test of a theory: that downtown Menlo Park's problem was never a lack of good places to go. It was a lack of reasons to be outside once you got there.
The Restaurants Already Arrived
If you've eaten downtown in the past year, you already know Santa Cruz Avenue looks different than it did in 2022. Causwells, the Marina neighborhood favorite known for quality burgers, took over the former Canteen space at Springline in March 2026, in a room roughly twice the size of its San Francisco original. Alisios completed Springline's restaurant lineup when it opened on June 11, joining Andytown Coffee Roasters, Barebottle Brewing Co., Burma Love, Che Fico and Proper Food. On the west side of downtown, Michelin-recognized chefs Meichih and Michael Kim opened Yeobo, Darling at 827 Santa Cruz Ave, drawing on Meichih's Taiwanese roots and Michael's Korean ones after closing their acclaimed restaurant Maum in Palo Alto. Shiok! returned to the neighborhood on Oak Grove Avenue after its longtime Chestnut Street building was sold out from under it, ending a run there that had lasted since 1999.
The Almanac counted at least 10 new restaurants and cafes opening in Menlo Park in 2025 alone. That's a genuine transformation, not a rounding error. But if you live here, you also know the thing that transformation didn't fix: Santa Cruz Avenue on a normal Friday night still went dark early. The restaurants were full of reservations. The sidewalk in between them was empty. A better dining scene doesn't automatically produce foot traffic. It just produces better destinations, each one a closed loop of its own.
A Private Nonprofit Filled the Gap City Hall Left Open
Before the pandemic, the city ran a summer block party that closed a stretch of Santa Cruz Avenue to cars for a single evening of music and entertainment. That event didn't survive. What downtown got instead, for years, was mostly quiet.
The fix came from four residents, not from the city council. Marnie Foody, Ben Eiref, Paul Charrette and Laura Melahn founded the Downtown Menlo Fund in late 2025 with a specific, narrow mission built around three pillars: beautify downtown, help local businesses become more viable, and pull the community together around the place they already live. Foody has been candid about why the nonprofit exists at all. She's noted that while the city does hold community events, they tend to happen outside the downtown core, leaving Santa Cruz Avenue itself without a regular draw.
Fourth Fridays is the fund's answer, and its design is deliberately different from the old block party. It doesn't close streets. It doesn't require city permits for a one-night shutdown. Instead, on the fourth Friday of every month from 6 to 9 p.m., businesses agree to stay open later and performers set up in front of storefronts up and down the avenue, turning existing sidewalk space into a rotating set of small stages. It's built to repeat every month rather than depend on a single summer weekend, which is a meaningfully different bet: a once-a-year event asks people to remember it exists, while a monthly one asks them to build a habit around it.
The Playbook Wasn't Invented Here
The clearest sign that the Downtown Menlo Fund isn't improvising is who they recruited to help run it. Carol Garsten, a jewelry artist and the event coordinator at Gallery House, is a co-founder of Los Altos First Fridays, a music series that has run in downtown Los Altos for roughly 15 years, and she also organized Palo Alto's 3rd Thursday series for two years before that. Fourth Fridays is explicitly patterned after the Los Altos model. Garsten isn't a volunteer learning the format as she goes. She's the person who already knows what works, brought in to run the same experiment a third time.
Gallery House itself is part of the story worth knowing if you haven't wandered in yet. The cooperative gallery, home to 24 member artists, moved to downtown Menlo Park in 2024 after 65 years in Palo Alto. For July's Fourth Fridays, Garsten organized a performance inside the gallery by Los Altos singer-songwriter Corrie Dunn, one half of a duo called the Song Gardeners, pairing live music with the kind of casual browsing that a gallery rarely gets on a normal Friday.
"Downtown is at its best when it gives people a reason to linger," Foody said. "You grab dinner, hear a band, and run into three friends on the sidewalk. Fourth Fridays makes that a monthly tradition."
What the First Night Actually Produced
The numbers from July 24 are small in the way early data always is, but they point in one direction. Ali El Safy, who owns both Bistro Vida and Bar Loretta, said his restaurants saw 40 to 50 more patrons than a typical Friday night. Gallery House's jump from a couple of visitors on an average day to more than 30 in the first hour of music is an even sharper signal, because a gallery doesn't benefit from restaurant overflow. People came specifically because there was something to walk toward. Hundreds of residents turned out overall, filling the plaza and spilling into the shops that stayed open past their usual close.
Round Two Looks Bigger Than Round One
Fourth Fridays returns on August 28, and the lineup already shows the format growing rather than just repeating. A new stage has been added at Wells Fargo, hosting the Dale Nesbitt Jazz Band, on top of the venues that worked in July. Here's where to find the music if you're heading down:

If the pattern from July to August holds, expect the footprint to keep expanding rather than settle into a fixed format. Worth noting separately: the same June 23 city council meeting that's shaping downtown's future also loosened zoning rules on Santa Cruz Avenue, opening the ground floor to spas, salons and other personal service businesses without a conditional use permit, and allowing small-scale recreation uses like gyms to apply for permits for the first time. Downtown's restaurant boom happened inside the old rules. Whatever comes next won't be limited to food.
The Part Worth Remembering
The interesting thing about Fourth Fridays isn't the music, and it isn't really even the foot traffic numbers, though those are the first real proof the format is working. It's that downtown Menlo Park had already solved the harder problem, attracting genuinely good restaurants and a Michelin-adjacent dining scene, and still needed someone to solve the easier one: giving people an actual reason to be outside on a Friday. That gap got filled by four residents with a folding table's worth of goodwill and a coordinator who'd already run the same event twice in neighboring towns, not by a city department.
